Drake Carson, a retired Chicago beat cop, knows his mind is going up in sparks like Chinese New Year, but he's not going to let that stop him from catching his archnemesis, the Misfit. As Drake chases the Misfit--who Drake believes to be evil incarnate--across a dark and secretive America, Drake crosses paths with Father Tom, a defrocked priest, Becca, an ex-drug addict and single mother, Kermit, a manic-depressive traveling performer, Dr. Dutch Mortlock, a sadistic surgeon and his soon to be bride, and finally a malleable little girl named Penny who may hold the key to the Last Gleaming. Drake knows he can't heal America's wounds, but maybe, just maybe, he can come to terms with his own.
